about embodied awakening

The practice of Embodied Awakening infuses ancient yogic wisdom with scientifically-verified and acclaimed somatic psychology +  neuroscience, drawn from Laura’s educational, clinical, and professional experiences. The alchemy these disciplines create when skillfully interwoven by Laura’s insight + technique is profound.

Every experience we have in life is stored in our cells, lives in our breath, and is imprinted into our nervous system, and the majority of our communication is subtle and nonverbal. Somatic psychology can be viewed as the study of the mind-body connection, the relationship between our physical matter and our energy, the interaction of our body structures with our thoughts and behaviors. Somatic exploration may include explorative and symbolic movement, mindfulness, sound, touch, mirroring, and breath. Somatic work calls upon the study of the mysterious totality of the body, mind, and soul.

“You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather.”

Meet Laura

Laura’s journey into vast world of yoga began in 2005, when she stumbled upon a class at her university gym after pausing from a life of competitive dance. She instantly fell in love with the practice, the special shapes, the deep breaths, and the extraordinary yoga community in Boulder, Colorado. However, she was most deeply impacted by yoga’s ability to help her manage her stress and anxiety, and was struck by the profound insights she gained on the mat and through meditation practices. Yoga became such an important part of Laura’s life that she made sure to seek out a study abroad experience that quenched her desire to learn more about yoga and world religion. Her opportunity abroad on Semester as Sea landed her in India studying Bhakti yoga for a short time in 2007. After receiving her 200-hour vinyasa yoga certification in 2009, Laura began to share her passion for the practice as a teacher, advocate, mentor, and teacher training facilitator. She has supported thousands of students on and off the mat to increase their body literacy + empowering them to learn how to become their own healer and self advocate. Today, she continues to be blown away by the power of awareness, breath, and movement to bring her back home to herself and her body time and time again.

Her devotion to and leadership within the space of the physical yoga practice is coupled with a deep commitment to the exploration of the inner landscape. In 2013, she received her Master’s Degree in Somatic Counseling Psychology from Naropa University, a Buddhist University in Boulder, Colorado, receiving a dual concentration in dance/movement therapy and body psychotherapy. Laura’s specialized clinical focus on managing the symptoms of trauma and its impacts on the body led to her nonprofit work with military veterans - teaching, educating, and advocating trauma-informed yoga in Colorado for five years. A leader on the forefront of a new frontier, Laura developed her own style of trauma-informed yoga derived from her studies at Naropa University and facilitated mentorship for other trauma-informed teachers with a special focus on the military community. Her work is influenced by so many professors including but not limited to Zoe Avstreih, Christine Caldwell, Ryan Kennedy, and Wendy Allen as well as the works and contributions of Stephen Porges, Peter Levine, David Emerson, Bessel van der Kolk, Ron Kurtz, Francine Shapiro, and Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen.

Laura believes that every human being is fundamentally, biologically designed to be happy, healthy, and successful. Through the implementation of customized healing plans, her clients experience increases in body literacy, a befriending of the nervous system, and the dissolving of habits and patterns that stunt resilience. Laura’s work inspires radical liberation of the body, mind, and spirit.

“Laura offers healing modalities that are grounded in science, physiology, emotional insight and interpersonal skill. She has a depth and breadth of knowledge that she can apply to serve traumatized, stressed, worn out or worn down people. Laura’s skill at delivering a practice attuned to the evident yet unknown traumatic experience of her students is unparalleled. Her choice of postures, her pace, the cadence and timbre of her voice all combine to create a nervous system down regulation that is sustainable. Her role as teacher and coordinator in developing the competence of non-profit Comeback Yoga laid a strong foundation for that organization.”
